Collection Notes: Specimens should be collected early in the acute phase of infection. Nasopharyngeal aspirate/wash, throat swabs, bronchial lavage specimens must be collected in microtest (MA) microbe transport tube or equivalent. Specimen smears on acetone-fixed slides may be submitted—do not use spray-on type of fixative. Indicate source of specimen.
Clinical Utility: The direct immunofluorescent antibody test (DFA) can provide definitive indentification of Adenovirus Ag which may aid in determining prognosis and appropriate therapy.
