Collection Notes: Specimen must be centrifuged within 1 hour of collection. Transfer serum into a sterile, plastic, crew-capped aliquot tube. Grossly hemolyzed specimens are not acceptable.
Clinical Utility: Measurement of C1 Inhibitor aids in the diagnosis of hereditary angioneurotic edema (increased blood vessel permeability causing swelling of tissues) and a rare form of angioedema associated with lymphoma (lymph node cancer). Genetic deficiency of C1 Inhibitor leads to angioneurotic edema. Acquired C1 Inhibitor deficiency occurs in diseases of the B-cell system.
