Collection Notes: Draw to the proper fill level (do not overfill or underfill) because the correct ratio of blood to citrate is critical (9:1). Mix by gentle inversion 5 – 6 times to mix. Centrifuge for 15 min at 1500 x g within one hour of collection. Remove plasma using a plastic pipette and transfer into a new tube. Repeat centrifugation at 1500 x g for 15 minutes to assure complete platelet removal. Transfer the platelet-poor plasma into a new plastic vial using a plastic transfer pipette. Label tube appropriately. Freeze immediately. Thawed or room temperature specimens will be rejected. Hemolyzed plasma is not acceptable. Ship on dry ice.
Clinical Utility: D-Dimer is a very sensitive marker for the activation of coagulation. When D-Dimer values below the cutoff are obtained, deep venous thrombosis (DVT) of the lower limb and pulmonary embolism (PE) can be excluded with high sensitivity.
